Basics of Digital Marketing

Digital marketing platforms

What is meant by digital marketing?

Digital Marketing is the act of promoting or selling products or services with the help of digital devices.

Various digital channels such as social media, email, search engines, and websites can be used to interact with your target audience and attract them to your product or service.

Digital Marketing has changed the practice of marketing almost completely.

Earlier marketers used to leverage newspapers, radio, TV, and yellow pages to reach consumer markets. In some industries, some of these channels may still be effective.

Both traditional and digital marketing have their selling points. It ultimately comes down to which one fits your need.

You can use a combination of digital and traditional marketing, based on your target audience and the service/product you are offering.

Now, let’s see the types of digital marketing.

Digital Marketing Types

Here’s a quick rundown of some of the most common digital marketing types:-

Search Engine Optimization(SEO)

Now, what is SEO, and how it works?

SEO is the practice of increasing organic traffic on the Search Engine Results Page(SERP) to make a website more discoverable, thereby driving traffic and sales.

Let me explain it to you in a simpler way.

When you search for something on a search engine, let’s say Google, the search engine shows you some websites which are ranked based on what search engine considers most relevant to your search term.

Ranking first on Search engine results

Not only relevance they also look at other factors including quality of content, keywords used, website speed, and user experience.

SEO works by proving to search engines that your content is most relevant for the term searched.

Search Engine Marketing(SEM)

SEM refers to the process of driving traffic and gaining visibility from search engines through paid ads(SEM) and free, organic listings(SEO).

The difference between SEO and SEM is that SEO is a part of SEM.

In SEM you pay for displaying your ads to people who are actively searching for the keyword you’re targeting.

It can significantly boost your website traffic and also give you an advantage over your competitors since ads are displayed at the top of search results.

Email Marketing

Email Marketing is a marketing strategy in which you use email as a tool to deliver commercial messages and generate sales.

Email Marketing

As a marketing channel, it is cost-effective. It has the highest ROI(return-on-investment), as compared to other marketing channels.

Email marketing has evolved a lot over the years into one of the most effective forms of direct marketing.

According to a study by Exact Target,66% of Americans have purchased as a result of a marketing message they received through the mail.

So email marketing is an essential part of your marketing strategy.

Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate Marketing is when you promote a product or service that belongs to another person or company and earn a commission whenever a sale is made while using certain strategies to achieve this.

Here’s how affiliate marketing works:

  • You enter an affiliate program
  • You select a product to promote. Once selected you’ll be given a unique affiliate link.
  • You promote the affiliate link through Social Media, Blogs, YouTube videos, Paid Ads, or any other platform.
  • You receive a commission when someone purchases the product after clicking on your link.

Influencer Marketing

It is a form of marketing in which you collaborate with influencers who can help you reach your target audiences and promote your brand and products or services.

Don’t know what is an influencer?

An Influencer is a person who has gained credibility in a certain niche. (eg. fashion, food, fitness, etc.)

Social Media Marketing(SMM)

SMM is the use of social media platforms for brand promotion, target audience growth, driving website traffic, and increasing sales.

It can be paid(ads) or unpaid(organic).
